The gift that goes on giving

What's a Forest Carbon 'gift tree'?

It's one native tree in a dedicated 'gift tree' woodland scheme of 10 000 trees. - the giver pays for its planting and lifetime protection. On the back of the card (see right) you'll find the unique number of your 'limited edition' tree.

Where is this woodland?

It's at Crairieknowe in Dumfriesshire, just to the west of the A76 between Enterkinfoot and Sanquhar (i.e. between Dumfries and Kilmarnock). With other, sustainable, forestry projects going on in the vicinity, these mixed-species native gift trees will provide a nice bit of extra variety for the local fauna and flora. (They cover about 18 acres.)

What sort of trees?

Silver Birch, Downy Birch, Sessile Oak Ash, Rowan, Sycamore, Alder, Willow , Pedunculate Oak, Wild Cherry, Larch, Scots Pine and woody shrubs. To enhance the health and effectiveness of the woodland we include a tiny percentage of naturalised trees such as the Western Hemlock which can live for 1200 years. Forest Carbon have themselves paid for these trees (and some natives, too). Altogether we've planted 2 000 extras, as insurance.

Who wants a random tree in the middle of nowhere?

Everyone loves a tree! People can visit the site and so can their great-grandchildren - their gift tree will still be there, doing its job. This dedicated scheme is for ten thousand trees only and the cards are numbered accordingly to assure you that we don't sell the same tree twice (we don't attach physical numbers to each tree). But if you're passing by and want to check out the growing woodland over the years we're sure it would be pleased to see you. (It's about 200 yards off the road so sensible shoes will be needed).

How come it's so cheap?

Your gift is subsidized by the UK Forestry Commission who, through grant aid, encourages the creation of high-standard woodlands such as this one. Schemes must abide by Kyoto Protocol principles such as 'additionality' and 'permanence' to qualify.

'Permanence'? 'Additionality'? It's just a silly old tree!

As with people, that depends on how it lives its life. If a native tree is left to live out its days amongst other species, to reproduce itself, support biodiversity, clean the air,

send out oxygen, lock down carbon, tame the weather and look beautiful, then it's a worthy working tree.

Unless it's burnt down it can claim to have 'permanently' disposed of a certain amount of C02. 'Additionality' means that the tree in question could not have been planted EXCEPT FOR its carbon-related funding. (This particular scheme is only possible because of Forestry Commission grant aid plus your payment for the gift ).

Is your scheme officially recognised?

Our gift tree trees meet the usual Forest Carbon Standard which means they also meet both Forestry Commission

and the UK Woodlands Assurance Standard requirements for quality, biodiversity and management.

What if the tree meets with an early death?

By contract (and by law) it must be replaced. In addition we plant a 'safety buffer' of trees to make up for any lazy ones.

Turning order into chaos...

This soldierly looking hill will grow up to be a wild riot of trees and shrubs of all shapes and sizes. The place will be alive with all sorts of buzzings, chirpings, scufflings and rustlings.

NB: Materials and processes used for Gift Trees cards (cellophane, card, envelopes, printing, etc.) are as environmentally friendly as possible, i.e. biodegradable, sustainable, recycled, etc. The remaining carbon footprint was measured and carbon-busting trees planted by way of compensation. (We love an excuse to plant a tree!)
